The philosophers from the time of the Sophists and Socrates had succeeded in tearing down many of the assumptions of knowledge to the point that all that was left for many was skepticism - what came next filled in that opening like a salve on a wound - "answers" to all the riddles of the universe - with eschatological, teleological ramifications for all.
